    Description

This is a vintage chromed box for storing selected surgical instruments which provides labelled locations for each instrument. The box has a 1912 patent date but is probably newer. The instruments that are included are significant vintage items which would enhance any surgical history collection. Included are:
Gigli Saw Handles and Wire Saws:
This saw has neurosurgical and orthopedic applications where conventional bladed saws won’t suffice. The chrome handles are in very good condition but the wire saws are rusty.
    Bone Drill Handle and Bit
: An orthopedic instrument with several different uses.
    Wyeth Pins:
These long (and very sharp) instruments were used in orthopedics and had their main application in stabilizing during amputations.
    Murphy Buttons
: There are three sizes of these devices which were invented at the end of the 1890s and used up to 1930 or so in end-to-end anastomoses of bowel and bile ducts. They facilitated the process of joining the ends of the bowel or duct and are considered forerunners of today’s surgical stapling procedures.
There are interesting articles on the web detailing the history and use of each of these instruments. The Wyeth Pins and Murphy Buttons are particularly rare and highlight this very collectible item. THESE ITEMS ARE INTENDED FOR DISPLAY ONLY AND ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR CLINICAL APPLICATIONS.
