Description
From my Medical Collection: Here we have an
Antique, Late 1800's
, SHARP & SMITH Medical Surgeon's Arm Leg Bone Amputation Saw with EBONY Han
dle.
J. P. Sharp and Wm. N. Smith were surgical instrument manufactures with facilities first on Randolph St. and later on Wabash St, Chicago, IL. They operated from approx. 1876 to the very early 1900’s. Their name appears on the front edge of the 'pistol' grip handle. We can tell that this instrument is from the pre-sterilization period (before approx. 1895) as evident by the use of natural materials (Ebony) and the lack of totally smooth surfaces in the design of the instrument. The checkered Ebony handle is very good condition with no chips, cracks or breaks. The scales are firmly attached to the handle. The blade is in very good condition. It is sharp and has only very minor discoloration marks. The saw is approx. 14-1/4" long. T
hese saws were usually found included in
'Capital' Surgical Sets
, which had a large compliment of instruments and were used in the very rear area of a battle region or in a hospital (large fine mahogany crafted cases with specific spaces for each instrument).
This is a Maker identified saw that will help you complete your surgical set, amputation set or Sharp & Smith collection.
