Description
Hickok 6000 Mutual Conductance Tube Tester
The Original Hickok case which is solid and the Hickok leatherette is tattered a bit, but still in good enough shape for use (pics 19 - 23).
A New Custom Case can be made upon request for an additional cost.
The tube chart is big and it binds near each end. It works for about 99% of the tubes and I got it to the first tube listed, but could not go any further to see the date of the tube chart.
This is an earlier 6000 Series Hickok Tube Tester which is salient by the beefier transformer and the chrome plugs on the front and rear of the chassis. These are holes that were originally there for screws that were plugged when Hickok started to use a new design for the case that only needed 4 screws.
Calibrated and Near Perfect Specs in the original case. The
RCA 83 and Hickok (RCA) 5Y3GT
rectifiers tubes tested as good as NOS and the
tube island sockets tested good with no issues
(see pic 18).
Included is a DVD of the operation manual that includes tube data, obsolete, foreign, and domestic; voltage specs; schematic; additional information on maintenance, and Hickok's calibration procedures for the 6000/A. Also included is a copy of a 6000 manual with tube data and other info.
24 PICS THAT ENLARGE ABOVE
Voltage SPECS that can be seen in the pictures below. All tests were done with the correct shunt resistor to duplicate 1,000 Ohms/Volt Meter.
Picture 3 shows the AC signal voltage 2.49 SPEC is 2.5 +- .2
Picture 4 is the plate voltage of 150.6 SPEC is 150 +- 5
Picture 5 is the screen voltage of 133.5 SPEC is 130 +- 5
(Hickok's calibration procedure for the 6000 has the spec at 135.0 which is incorrect. That is the spec with a 20000 ohms/volt meter and it has it the same 135V for the 1000 ohms/volt meter which is a typo, it should be 130V on 1000 ohms/volt which is the same on every other Hickok tube Tester).
Picture 6 shows the low screen voltage of 56.3 SPEC is 56 +- 3
Picture 7 is bias voltage at 100 which is -39.51 SPEC is -39 +- 1
Picture 8 is bias at 22 which is -3.06 SPEC is -3.0 +- .2
Picture 9 shows the filament voltage with the tube in the socket at 6.28 which there is no SPEC for in any Hickok manuals, but critical to get accurate test results. Many Hickok testers can be calibrated, but the heater voltage drops below 6 volts when a tube is in the socket causing inaccurate results and may be signs of a weak transformer
Picture 10 and 11 shows a 6L6 calibration tube with Gm of 5750/5800 being tested with results of 5700 right on the original mark on the dial at 87.
This 6L6 on average tests for Gm at 5750/5800 on other Hickok testers, and has tested as high as 6500 on a calibrated Hickok tube tester and as low as 5200.
Pictures 12 and 13 shows the same 6L6 calibration tube with Gm of 5750/5800 being tested with results of 5700 (a tad under 5750) which is right at the mark on the dial at 94.
Picture 14 and 15 shows a 12AX7 calibration tube with an average Gm of 1400 to 1900 on several calibrated Hickok testers being tested with results of 1550 right at the original Hickok mark right on the edge of 74.
The 9 pin noval socket is tight and tested the tube with no issues.
Picture 16 shows a 6AQ5 with Gm of 4600 to 4900 on several calibrated Hickok testers being tested using the 6K mark on the dial with results of 5200. The 7 pin socket is tight and tested the tube with no issues.
Pic 17 shows a good as NOS 83 mercury rectifier being tested on plate 1 with expected results.
Pic 18 shows a close up the 7 pin min and the 9 pin sockets.
Please note you will not be able to close the lid if you put full size socket savers on the 7 & 9 pin sockets. Highly recommend using socket savers on those 2 sockets if you are going to test many of those tubes to avoid having to change the sockets on the tube island.
I have a very limited supply of military socket savers for the 7 and 9 pin sockets that are short and will allow the lid to be closed when installed on a 6000 series tube tester. I can install a pair for an additional .00. Expensive? Yes, but so are these socket savers if you can find them.
If you want the socket savers let me know and do not pay until you get an updated invoice.
The original marks for the 3k, 6k, and 15k are right on the money.
The
SHUNT
was cleaned and
CALIBRATED
in order to give it consistency. Most of the shunt potentiometers on any Hickok tester, unless cleaned, has become fouled up with the original thick lubricant that has hardened over the past 50 years making the shunt dial very inconsistent.
Very important on a tester that relies on the shunt for Gm testing to be as consistent as possible.
A very small movement of the shunt dial can make a big difference with the readings.
This is a 6000 series tester that uses the shunt to determine Gm values rather than a set switch such as the 533a, 752, 750, etc., thus not as consistently accurate due to the use of the movable shunt dial to determine Gm values and why if a new mark is to made on the dial, it is better to put it directly on a number rather than between so it is easier to set the dial on the correct mark. Even though the shunt was cleaned, this and any other shunt can still be erratic at times
Checked all the filament voltages and they are all working at proper levels.
Please know what tubes this 6000 can test since it cannot test the newer campactron tubes without another tube island or adapter. Please know what tubes this 6000 can test before buying.
I have described what this tester is and provided as many pictures possible and this 6000 cannot be returned for any reason and is sold as is for parts or repair. This 6000 is sold as is for Parts or Repair. I will insure the tester in shipping at my expense. Security Measures are in place that will show if this tester was tampered with in any way. If you are uncomfortable with anything stated DO NOT BUY THIS TESTER!
This 6000 is sold as is for parts or repair and is listed as is for parts or repair. Why Parts or Repair? Some scammers get away with abusing eBay's buyer protection, the age of this device and the nature of vintage electronics, potential user error, and many other things that are out of my control. So do not send me a message asking why for parts or repair? This only means you did not read this and I will not respond.
I have many years of experience working with Hickok tube testers which include working in a certified Hickok warranty repair shop where I did all the repairs under warranty, and repairing Hickok testers that were no longer under warranty. I was replacing Hickok meters in the 80s and for a small fee as a favor for customers and that time building or repairing meters was much more difficult
.
The pictures are part of the description so please enlarge them and take a look for better details.
The test adapter and calibration tubes are not included
.
Will be packed in an 18x14x12 box weighing 20 pounds.
Several Options Available for Shipping.
If you have any questions please ask before buying.
I include insurance for shipping

Terms of Sale
AGREEMENT
Must read and agree to terms below:
Please note and understand that there are no returns on this tester and is sold strictly for parts or repair.
All sales are final and this Hickok 6000 tube tester and is sold for parts or repair only due to scammers and the nature of vintage electronics that can easily be damaged by user error. I am creating my own web site to sell tube testers, and tube tester accessories such as new meters, which is cheaper than being scammed. I started the site once and will be doing so again under the name "Hickok Meters" since anyone who owns and uses a Hickok tube tester is eventually going to need a new meter. The delay is having to learn Word Press to complete the site.
If you have a legitimate problem upon receiving this tester such as the 83 rectifier was broke in shipping, which rarely happen, but can in high altitudes shipping internationally due to the vacuum and increased pressure, or something got broke in shipping, please notify me immediately. Immediately means within a few hours of receiving it not 36 hours later or 2 weeks.
The transistor function (if applicable) was not checked on this tester.
This tester is over 50 years old and should last another 50 if used and maintained properly, but if directions are not followed and someone tries to test a shorted tube e.g., any tube tester, or meter, can be destroyed in a second. I am not responsible for user error. You are expected to read the manual and understand what you are reading. You need to familiarize yourself with the tester and how it functions. Please take the time to do this since it could save you a lot of grief such as pressing the Gm button when testing a rectifier. It is an easy mistake to make and why you need to be careful when using this type of equipment. If you read the manual and use the manual while using the tester until you become experienced, you should have very few problems if any.
Also, the same tube tested on different and also calibrated testers will usually give different results on each tester. Please do not expect this tester to have the same exact results of a tube tested on another tester. If you expect that this tester will test the exact same Gm because it is also calibrated and all within specs, then are disappointed and want to return it because it tested a tube higher or lower than you expected, do not buy this tester. You are looking to buy something that does not exist and I do not have the time or money to waste on non-issues and unobtainable perfection.
I am not responsible for teaching you to use this tube tester or paying anything if you take it to someone for anything.
This is a 6000 series tester that uses the shunt to determine Gm values rather than a set switch such as the 533a, 752, 750, etc., thus not as consistently accurate due to the use of the moveable shunt dial to determine Gm values.
Thus this is not a laboratory tube tester and if you expect laboatory tube tester results from this 6000A tube tester; do no buy it. This tube tester, due to its age and the nature of vintage electoronics, is sold as is for parts or repair. If the tester is damaged in shipping do not try to use it but rather contact me and a claim will be filed with shipper and being refunded will be contingent upon whether or not the shipper honors the claim. I take pictures of packing the tester and it should not be damaged in shipping and packed extremely well with fragile labels.
