Description
A good, rare example of an early 19th Century multi-blade (12) scarificator or mechanical fleam by A. Robertson of Dublin in good working order and condition. To think that “bleeding” was an accepted medical practice back then sends a bit of a shudder down the spine. Still - better than covering yourself in leaches I suppose.
Brass main body construction with steel blades and cocking mechanism. Brass trigger button. Base engraved in Copper Plate and Copper plate script “A Robertson Dublin”. 12 blade slots to base. 9 blades complete; 1 visible but broken and two appear to be missing or have been snapped off. Please see the photos which form a part of the description.
Measures 2 x 1 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches. Weighs a hefty 298 grams or 10 1/2 ounces.
Condition is good. Blades operate well. Cocking mechanism functions as intended, if a little stiff.
